The servers we use run Linux.

The web server is a small unit with:

• either single or dual processor
• dual ethernet ports
• SATA hard drives
• mini tower or rack mount chassis
• 1 GB RAM or higher
• Apache 2 web server
• MySQL database server 5.0 or higher
• PHP 5.0 or higher
• Perl 5.8 or higher

The database server is a larger unit with:

• dual processor
• 2 GB RAM or higher
• 2 Gigabit ethernet ports
• Ultra SCSI drives (160 or higher) or SAS drives
• RAID 5 or 10 for redundancy
• tower or rack mount chassis
• Apache 2 web server
• Samba file server
• Perl 5.8 or higher

Why linux on the server?

It's cheap, has very long run times, can be updated without rebooting most of the time, it's made for networking.

A customer of ours has been running the system for over five years now and the database server has been rebooted three (3) times: 1) replace a failed network card, 2) a 3 day blackout, 3) updated kernel version. Eight months without touching the box is good as far as support goes. It is now rebooted every 4 - 6 months just to clear the memory and give things a "fresh" start.
